Locked out of MFA: Old phone wiped and no iCloud sync. Any recovery options?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help with a recovery dilemma.

About two years ago, I switched phones. I was using Microsoft Authenticator for MFA, but I recently realized that I didn't have the iCloud backup/sync feature enabled at the time. To make matters worse, I have already factory reset my old device.

I am now trying to access an account that requires MFA, but I’m stuck in a loop since I can't generate the code or approve the notification. Is there any technical way to recover the old keys from Microsoft Authenticator, or am I strictly limited to account recovery through the service provider?

Thanks in advance!

If you are locked out of your account due to losing access to Microsoft Authenticator and you do not have the iCloud backup or sync enabled, your options for recovery are somewhat limited. Here are the steps you can take:

    1. Contact Support: Reach out to the service provider for the account you are trying to access. They may have specific recovery options available for situations like yours.
    2. Use Alternative Recovery Methods: If you set up alternative recovery methods (such as a backup phone number or email), you may be able to use those to regain access.
    3. Admin Assistance: If you are part of an organization, you can ask a Global Administrator to reset your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) settings. They can do this through the admin portal, which may allow you to set up MFA again with a new device.
    4. Temporary Account Creation: If you cannot reach support, consider creating a temporary account (trial tenant) to submit a support ticket requesting assistance from the Data Protection team on behalf of your original account.

Unfortunately, there is no technical way to recover the old keys from Microsoft Authenticator if the app was wiped and no backup was available. You will need to rely on the recovery options provided by the service provider.
