I received a new laptop at work and when signing into the Microsoft account it states the Microsoft account doesn’t exist. I need help logging in to get past this step and allow me to set up the computer.

    Hi Moses Campos,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand that when setting up your new work laptop, you receive a message stating that the Microsoft account does not exist. I’ll help you check this step by step.

This message usually appears for one of the following reasons:

    1. You are trying to sign in with a Work or School account on a screen that expects a personal Microsoft account.
    2. The email address was entered incorrectly.
    3. The account has not yet been created or assigned by your organization’s IT administrator.

    Please try the following:

Step 1: Confirm the account type

    • If this is a company-issued laptop, you most likely need to sign in using your Work or School account (for example: ******@companyname.com).
    • On the sign-in screen, make sure you select the option for Work or school account (not personal Microsoft account).

Step 2: Double-check the email address

    • Ensure there are no spelling errors.
    • Make sure the correct domain (for example, @company.com) is used.

Step 3: Contact your IT administrator If this is a corporate device and you still receive the message, your IT administrator may need to:

    • Assign a Microsoft 365 license
    • Enable the account
    • Add the device to your organization
    • Confirm the account has been properly created in Microsoft Entra ID

And for your reference, you can find the customer service number for your country or region here: Customer service numbers – Microsoft Support

Since this is a work device, account provisioning and device setup are typically managed by your organization’s IT team. If the issue continues, I recommend contacting your company’s IT support directly so they can verify the account configuration on their end.

If possible, please let us know:

    • Whether this is a personal or work device
    • The exact wording of the error message

This will help narrow down the cause. Looking forward to your update.

If you are receiving the message that the Microsoft account doesn’t exist when trying to sign in on your new laptop, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check the Account Type: Ensure that you are using the correct account type. If your organization uses Microsoft 365, you should be signing in with your Work or School account rather than a personal Microsoft account.
    2. Sign Out and Sign Back In: If you are already signed in with a different account, try signing out and then signing back in using the correct account. You can do this by opening a Microsoft 365 app, selecting your name or profile picture, and choosing to sign out.
    3. Verify Account Existence: Confirm that your Microsoft account is active and exists. You may want to check with your IT department or Microsoft 365 administrator to ensure that your account has been set up correctly and that you have the necessary permissions.
    4. Contact Support: If you continue to experience issues, consider reaching out to Microsoft support or your organization's IT support for further assistance.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the sign-in issue and proceed with setting up your new laptop.
