A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Hi, fabio gregori
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
Thanks for your question. What you’re describing usually happens when Excel has switched into a special keyboard mode (most often “overtype/overwrite” or a selection mode like EXT/ADD), so your keystrokes stop behaving like normal typing inside cells. These modes can be triggered by the Ins, F8, or Shift+F8 keys, sometimes even without you noticing.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
Switch off the Insert/Overtype mode
Click a cell, press F2 (to start editing), then press Ins once (on some laptops it’s Fn + Ins). Ins toggles “overwrite/overtype” behavior on and off in editors, including Excel.
Use the On-Screen Keyboard to toggle Ins
Open Windows Start, type On-Screen Keyboard, then click the Ins key there once. It bypasses any laptop-keyboard quirk and forces Windows/Excel to receive a clean “Ins” toggle.
Turn off “Use Insert key to control overtype mode” in Excel
Go to File > Options > Advanced > Editing options, then uncheck “Use the Insert key to control overtype mode.” It prevents Excel from re-entering that mode if Ins is being triggered accidentally.
Check whether Excel is in EXT or ADD selection mode
Look at the bottom status bar. If you see EXT press F8. If you see ADD press Shift+F8. These modes change how keys behave by extending/adding selections instead of normal editing.
Confirm the file isn’t blocked from editing
If you see a yellow bar (Protected View), click Enable Editing, and check Review > Unprotect Sheet if protection is on. Protected View or sheet protection can stop typing entirely, even if the keyboard is fine.
Rule out add-ins by starting Excel in Safe Mode
Hold Ctrl while launching Excel (or run Safe Mode), then try typing. If it works, disable add-ins in File > Options > Add-ins. Add-ins can intercept input and cause “only Excel is broken” symptoms.
Hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you need further assistance.
