Updates normally do not delete files. So something else likely happened.
First, check if you’re signed into a different user profile. Open File Explorer > This PC > Users. Do you see another folder with your name or a different name?
Next, check OneDrive. Your Desktop may be syncing there. Open OneDrive online and see if your files are in the Recycle Bin.
Also, open Recycle Bin on your desktop. Are the files there?
Did Windows show a message about a “temporary profile” after the update?
And were your files stored only on Desktop, or backed up anywhere before?
