Hi @Ben Greeley,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand how frustrating this is. If your Microsoft account is still linked to an Xbox/Microsoft family group, your privacy and online safety settings can be locked, even if you’re over 18 because family roles can control who is allowed to change those settings.
I recommend starting with these troubleshooting steps:
1/ Check Your Family Status & Leave the Group
- Go to the Microsoft Family page and sign in.
- Click the three dots/menu next to your name.
- Select Leave family group and confirm by clicking Remove.
Note: If the "Leave" option is missing, it’s likely due to your specific role or permissions within that group.
2/ Verify Your Age & Role
According to Xbox Support, once you reach the age of majority, you should be able to either leave the group or be promoted to an Organizer role. Organizers have full control over their own privacy and online safety settings.
3/ Update Settings via Xbox Web
Once you’ve cleared any family group restrictions, try managing your settings directly through the Xbox Privacy & Online Safety page. Ensure you are signed in and that the Xbox service status is "Up and Running."
4/ Handling "Orphaned" Groups
If the group Organizer is unreachable or the account is "orphaned," you won't be able to remove yourself manually. In this case, you’ll need to contact Microsoft Support directly via their Contact Us page to have them manually adjust your account state.
Kindly update the outcome to let me further check if the problem persists.
