Hello,

My name is --PII REMOVED-- and I work as a Professor for the --PII REMOVED--. I bought a computer around 3 years ago with Windows Home installed, but I guess that I reinstsalled Windows Pro using our account in the --PII REMOVED--.

The problem now is that the system requires me to activate the Windows but when I try it says that there is a Windows 11 home digital license for this device running Windows 11 Pro. "To activate using this digital licence, you need to install 11 HOme".

Whats should I do then? I would not like to reinstall the computer again

Regards,

--PII REMOVED--

    Hi Jorge Munilla Fajardo,
    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

    Please note that our Microsoft Q&A forum is a public platform, and we will modify your response/ question to hide your personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.

    You may now choose to upgrade your license from Home to Pro / or downgrade your installed Windows Pro to Home.

    If you choose to upgrade your license from Home to Pro, more information can be found here: Upgrade Windows Home to Windows Pro - Microsoft Support.

    If you choose not to upgrade your license, you need to install Home edition to your computer. Direct downgrading from Windows 11 Pro to Windows 11 Home is not supported, and it would require performing a clean install.

    Since you don't want to reinstall, there's a workaround to downgrade directly without data loss. This method is not officially supported, Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible if you take this workaround. Please follow these steps carefully.

    Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.

    • Open Notepad.
    • Paste this content:
        Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
        "CompositionEditionID"="Core"
        "EditionID"="Core"
        "ProductName"="Windows 10 Home"

        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
        "CompositionEditionID"="Core"
        "EditionID"="Core"
        "ProductName"="Windows 10 Home"

    • Save as "Windows-11-Home-Downgrade.reg" - includes " in file name box.
    • Run it to merge.
    • Perform an In-place upgrade with mounted ISO to downgrade Windows.

      Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides: How to run In-place upgrade in Windows 11 - Microsoft Community

    • When the In-place upgrade has finished, you will have Windows 11 Home and can activate it normally.

    I hope that above information is helpful to you.

    But my organización --PII REMOVED-- has an agreement that allows us to update our systems. I had Windows Home and I installed Windows 11 Pro from the website of my university. Is possible to vinculate this device to that agreement? (The device has been almost one year without being used, maybe this has been the cause of the problem).

    To resolve the issue of activating Windows 11 Pro on a device that currently has a Windows 11 Home digital license, you have a couple of options:

    1. Revert to Windows 11 Home: Since the digital license for the device is for Windows 11 Home, you could reinstall Windows 11 Home to activate it using the existing license. This would require you to reinstall the operating system, which you mentioned you would prefer to avoid.
    2. Use a Valid Windows 11 Pro License: If you have a valid Windows 11 Pro product key, you can enter it to activate Windows 11 Pro on your device. This would bypass the need to revert to Windows 11 Home.
    3. Contact Microsoft Support: If you believe that you should have a digital license for Windows 11 Pro linked to your Microsoft account, contacting Microsoft support may help you resolve the issue. They can assist in reassigning the license or provide further guidance.

    Unfortunately, if the device is only licensed for Windows 11 Home, you will need to either revert to that version or obtain a valid Pro license to activate Windows 11 Pro without reinstalling the operating system again.
