I keep getting a pop up saying critical update needed. When I download update nothing happens
do I need to do this and if so there is step 1 download and step2 update. I don't get past step 1

I've seen many reports online about this behavior with HP Display Control. So far, it doesn't seem to be a problem with Windows itself, but rather with the HP Display Control application.
I suggest you download and install HP Support Assistant and try to update HP Display Control using it.

If the pop-up you're receiving is directly from HP Support Assistant, try uninstalling and reinstalling it using the latest version from the link I provided above. Next, try updating HP Display Control.
