Hi,

Earlier today I received an email from Microsoft indicating that "You're over your Microsoft storage limit". In this email it was indicated that my account [Moderator note: personal info removed] Microsoft account is currently 12 GB over its storage limit of 5GB. The email continued to indicate that if you are over your storgae limit, you can no longer:

  • Save and back up new files to OneDrive
  • Sync files across devices
  • Send and receive emails from Outlook.com

The email was sent from [Moderator note: personal info removed]

Was this a genuine message or a phishing attempt? I was under the impression that my business premium subscription had significantly more storage capacity (1 TB).

Best regards,

    Hi @Willem Blaisse,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

According to Microsoft storage quotas - Microsoft Support, the 5 GB storage quota you are seeing typically applies to a personal Microsoft account (consumer OneDrive), not to Microsoft 365 Business subscriptions. Personal Microsoft accounts include those used with Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com, Gmail addresses, or even custom domain email addresses when they are registered as a personal Microsoft account.

Because you are licensed with Microsoft 365 Business Premium, your business (work) account is entitled to 1 TB of OneDrive storage, and this 5 GB limit does not apply to that business account. This does not mean your Business Premium storage is reduced or expired and your 1 TB business OneDrive remains intact and unaffected.

Please avoid interacting with any email links and verify the information of your current account storage quotes, I recommend checking storage directly:

    • Sign in directly to:
    • Check whether:
      • You see two separate storage dashboards
      • One shows 5 GB (personal account)
      • One shows 1 TB (Business Premium account)

Please use this article as reference to check your account storage quotas: Microsoft storage quotas - Microsoft Support

Since the email is not associated with Microsoft notifications and not intended for both your business and personal account, please refrain from clicking any embedded links and report the message as a phishing attempt.

I hope this provides enough clarity and helps you stay inform with your current situation.
