Hi, This is my personal email at home and I use the classic Outlook app on my laptop. I have an old 2016 paid Microsoft version. Only a few weeks ago, this started happening, I'm unsure why. I suspect that maybe I finished my MBA program and they deactivated by email account which I saved in this app. Hoping someone can assist.

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. I understand how confusing it is to see Outlook showing “Connect to server to see them,” especially when you are using a personal email at home and this only started recently.

This message appears when Outlook is unable to load older or full mailbox items because it is running in Cached Exchange Mode, which only downloads part of your mailbox and requires a connection to the server to retrieve everything. According to Microsoft Learn, this happens when Outlook stores only a subset of mailbox items locally and needs server access to load the rest. If your old MBA school email account was deactivated, Outlook can no longer connect to the school’s server, causing folders or messages to appear empty and triggering this message.

To resolve this for an active account, updating the “Mail to keep offline” setting to All, turning off Cached Exchange Mode, repairing the sync pipeline, or recreating the Outlook profile are the recommended steps in current Microsoft guidance. For a deactivated school account, Outlook will not be able to retrieve items because the server no longer exists for that mailbox, which means only emails already downloaded locally will remain visible.

May I ask if the account showing this message is your old school email, and whether you can still sign in to it through the web?

Please let me know what you find, and I’ll be glad to help you move forward and restore access to your messages wherever possible.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel
