How to fix display name?

I added someone who is not a part of my organization to my Microsoft Team. Upon adding them as a member, I was prompted to give the person a name. However, I did not know the name I used would be saved as their display name for everyone else to see.

I removed the individual and tried to add them again but it automatically adds them with the display name I originally entered.

How do I change the display name in Teams?

You don't have to remove the guest user's name in your Admin Center or Entra Portal. You can just edit the display name there. Then give it a 24-hour to sync.

    Hi @Nella

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you so much for taking the time to sharing your situation.

I understand how the situation can feel when a guest in Microsoft Teams keeps showing an unexpected display name, even after being removed and re‑added. This behavior can be surprising if you weren’t aware Teams saves that initial name in the background.

Here are steps that you can update it by editing that guest profile directly.

Option 1: Update the guest’s name in Microsoft Entra admin center

Note: You must have Entra ID admin permissions

    1. Go to https://entra.microsoft.com/
    2. In the left menu, select Users > All users User's image
    3. Find the guest using their email address
    4. Click on the guest you want to change their Display Name > Choose Edit properties.
    5. Edit the Display name field.
    6. Save your changes.

Changes usually sync to Teams within a few minutes but sometimes can take up to an hour.

Option 2: Remove the guest from your directory entirely

If you want to force a clean re‑invite:

Note: Removing them from the directory removes all guest access to your tenant.

    1. Go to https://entra.microsoft.com/ > Navigate to Users > Choose All users.
    2. Click on the guest you want to delete and re-add Display name
    3. Click Delete. User's image
    4. Now re‑invite them to Teams, you’ll be prompted for a name again.
