I cant login to my laptop unless i have a work or school account. Why is that? I want to use my personal Microsoft account but it wont let me

And it doesn't offer the set up for personal vs. work/school purpose? Do you recall seeing that?
Are you setting up using your Microsoft account, or your son's? If your son is a minor, you want to set it up with your account first and give him access later. If you are going to set up yours, is your Microsoft account an outlook.com domain address

Are you saying your personal Microsoft account is using a custom domain address? If so, that's the problem. Microsoft no longer allows using custom domain email address to serve as personal account's alias, but Microsoft does honor the ones previously allowed, and it does cause some issues though in certain product areas.
In order for the set up to go through, you need to give your Microsoft account an outlook alias.
Can you sign into your personal account via this link: https://account.live.com?
If so, go to Your Info > Sign in preference, Add an alias.
You have two options here:
Create new: this will allow you to use the native domain outlook.com to create a new alias.
Add existing: this will allow you to add a 3rd party email address, such as yahoo, gmail, as long as they are not already associated with another Microsoft account, and it cannot be a custom domain email address.
Once added, make this new alias your primary alias.
Then you should be able to set it up on the Lenovo with the new alias.

But, i still cant disconnect my work Microsoft account and make my personal Microsoft account the mail account on my laptop

2026-02-20T06:09:41.1766667+00:00 Yes that mattes. Enterprise edition will not accept personal account by design. You will need to contact Lenovo. If you were supposed to get home or pro edition then they loaded the wrong OS.
