    Hello @Hao

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Community!

Thank you for contacting us. I understand that you are working with mathematical notation in Microsoft Word and need guidance on how to correctly type the expression “t subscript i.” I am happy to assist.

    Please follow the below steps:

1/ Apply Subscript Formatting in Standard Text

This is the simplest approach for regular text.

    1. Type the characters “t” and “i.”
    2. Highlight the letter “i.”
    3. On the Home tab, select Subscript. Word will then display the expression as “t” with a subscript “i.”

For reference: Make text subscript or superscript - Microsoft Support

    2/ Use Math AutoCorrect

Math AutoCorrect automatically converts typed sequences into formatted mathematical notation.

    1. Go to File, then Options.
    2. Select Proofing, then AutoCorrect Options.
    3. Under the Math AutoCorrect tab, enable "Use Math AutoCorrect rules outside of math regions".
    4. Type the following sequence directly in your document: t_i image
    5. Press the space bar. Word will automatically convert this into “t” with a subscript “i.”

This method is referenced in Microsoft’s Quick start guide to Math AutoCorrect commands and symbols - Microsoft Support

3/ Insert the Expression Using the Equation Editor

This option is beneficial when the document contains many mathematical expressions.

    1. Go to the Insert tab.
    2. Select Equation.
    3. In the equation box, type: t_i
    4. Press the space bar, and Word will format it as “t” with a subscript “i.”

For reference: Insert mathematical symbols - Microsoft Support

This process is documented in Microsoft’s Insert mathematical symbols support article.

Kindly follow the given steps and let me know if it helps on your end. I look forward to your response.
