Excel for Web sometimes missing 1st input when typing with keyboard

When I select the tab for an Excel workbook in my browser, select a cell in the open worksheet, and start typing, the first character is often missed.

This happens most often when I have returned to the tab from another and with the first cell selected. It also happens if I have entered a formula into a cell in one workbook and then selected a cell or range in another workbook to populate the formula, but then try to edit one of the values in the resulting formula before completing it.

Any suggestions on what might cause excel to miss the 1st Input?

I am using Chrome version 144.0.7559.133 (Official Build) (64-bit), but also tried with Microsoft Edg and same results

    Dear Ryan Martin,

Thank you for posting your question on the Microsoft Q&A forum.

If you are experiencing an issue where the first character is occasionally missed when typing in Excel for the web, please try the following steps:

1/ Clear Browser Cache and Check Extensions

Corrupted cached files or browser extensions can sometimes cause input timing or focus issues.

First, test in an Incognito/InPrivate window.

If the issue does not occur there, it may be related to cache or extensions.

    In Chrome, go to:

    • Settings > Privacy & Security > Clear browsing data
    • Clear Cached images and files
    • Restart the browser afterward

Ensure your browser is fully updated.

Temporarily disable extensions such as ad blockers or password managers to check if they are interfering.

2/ Disable Hardware Acceleration in Chrome

Hardware acceleration can sometimes affect focus behavior in web applications.

    • In Chrome, navigate to: chrome://settings/system
    • Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available
    • Restart Chrome and test again.

    3/ Check Windows Keyboard Settings

Please ensure that Filter Keys is turned off, as it can cause delayed or ignored keystrokes:

    • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
    • Make sure Filter Keys is disabled.

Additionally, you may also try the following practical workarounds:

    • Click directly into the Formula Bar instead of typing directly into the cell.
    • Or when returning to a tab, select the cell and press F2 before typing.

If this works consistently, it confirms Excel isn’t fully in edit mode when you start typing.

I hope this information helps. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to let me know.
