Mouse suddenly misbehaving - confusing left with right, and up with down

My mouse suddenly started behaving as if I were holding it upside down. This occurred upon waking the computer from a sleep of a couple of hours. I've tried several things - looking for settings, putting the computer back to sleep, and shutting it down - but nothing worked.

    Hi @William Mason,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for providing those details. It is common for input devices to experience configuration "hiccups" immediately after a PC wakes from sleep mode.

To resolve this behavior and restore your mouse’s standard functionality, please try the following steps:

    1/ Verify primary button configuration

It is possible that the primary button assignment was inadvertently swapped in your system settings.

    • Navigate to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse
    • Ensure the Primary mouse button is set to Left.
    • Alternatively, open the Control Panel, go to Mouse > Buttons, and ensure the "Switch primary and secondary buttons" checkbox is unchecked.

    2/ Reconnect the hardware

If you are using a wired or wireless USB mouse, unplug the device or dongle, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it. Testing a different USB port can help rule out a connection error triggered by the power state change.

    3/ Update or reinstall drivers

If the buttons remain reversed, the driver may have failed to initialize correctly after sleep.

    • Open Device Manager, right-click your mouse under Mice and other pointing devices and select Update driver.
    • If no updates are found, select Uninstall device and restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver upon reboot.

    4/ Check Device-Specific software

If you are using a specialized mouse (such as a Microsoft, Logitech, or Razer device), please check the manufacturer's dedicated software (e.g., Mouse and Keyboard Center) to ensure no custom profiles were activated.

In case the problem persists, could you clarify a couple of details?

    • Are the buttons swapped (left-click acting as right-click), or is the cursor movement reversed (e.g., moving the mouse up moves the pointer down)?
    • Is the device connected via USB or Bluetooth?

Hopefully, this resolves the issue. Please let me know if you need further assistance!
