Hi dear,
I had a VM with Windows Server 2019 Standard Licence, but I deleted it.
When I want to reuse this licence it is normal that MicroSoft does not let me reuse it.
Could you please help me?
Juste for knowing I use this licence for education.
Thanks
Hossein

Hi Hossein,
In general, a Windows Server Standard license is tied to the hardware or virtual environment where it was first activated. If you delete the VM, the license does not automatically free itself for reuse. To reuse the license, you must ensure that the activation is properly reset. If the license was a retail or volume license, you can usually reactivate it on a new VM, provided it is not being used simultaneously elsewhere. However, if the license was OEM-based, it is bound to the original hardware and cannot be transferred.
For educational licenses, the rules may differ depending on how the license was issued (for example, through Azure Dev Tools for Teaching or MSDN subscriptions). In those cases, you should be able to reinstall and reactivate the license on a new VM, but you may need to contact Microsoft Support if activation fails.
If this answer helps clarify the situation, I’d appreciate it if you could click “Accept Answer” so others can benefit as well 🙂
