Sound Recordings app did not save recording over 3 hours. Any way to recover?

Today I used the sound recordings app to create an important back-up recording for work. The recording ended up being around 4 hours. It showed it was actively recording with no problems, and I paused and resumed recording several times.

However, when I hit the stop button and the file finished processing or whatever, it showed it was only 3 hours. It had deleted the last hour or so of my recording. I have more than enough storage on my computer.

Is there any way to recover this last hour of recording? I tried to convert the file from mp3 to other formats, but nothing.

I really wish I would have gotten a pop up or something warning me that there was a limit of 3 hours per recording or just automatically stopping instead of deleting important data that I rely on for work.

    Hi Sarah,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

I'm really sorry to hear about the experience you had, especially when everything appears to be working normally during the session.

The 3‑hour limit you encountered is actually part of the current app design, and I am truly sorry for how restrictive that feels in real use. Your feedback is completely reasonable, and it highlights a real-world need that many others may share.

I really wish I could assist you directly on this issue. However, the behavior you're experiencing is tied to back‑end systems and service functionality, and unfortunately, we don't have the authority or access required to investigate or make changes at that level.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators, contributors including external Microsoft employees cannot directly intervene in Microsoft product features or access back-end systems. Our role is limited to providing technical guidance on reported issues, requests, or ideas.

Given these limitations, the most appropriate avenue for product changes or feature requests is to:

As an alternative in the meantime, you might consider using a third‑party recording application that supports longer sessions.

Thank you for your understanding, and I hope the support team can resolve this for you soon.

    Hi,

Sound Recorder can record up to three hours per recording file. This means that it just records up to 3 hours. The record should automatically stop recording at exactly 3 hours. If you continue experiencing that the app will not stop automatically after 3 hours of recording, try repairing the app.

Go to settings > Apps > Installed apps > Find the Sound/Voice Record > More or Advanced Option > Terminate, then repair. If it does not work, please reset your app.
