Hi Kurt,
Good day. I'm Jhun an independent advisor. In regards with this issue, it may be caused by an old or invalid sensitivity / protection policy applied through Microsoft Information Protection (IRM). This often happens with files protected by other apps.
Lets try to do this steps below.
A. Check and ensure you are signed into the correct account.
- Open Word, go to File tab > Account.
- Confirm you're signed into the account that originally had access to the document.
- If the label belongs to a company tenant you no longer have access to, the file will not open unless the organization will remove or update the protection.
B. Test Word in safe mode to test licensing.
- Press Windows+R and Type: winword /safe
- Try opening the document
- If it opens in Safe Mode, the issue may be: Corrupt Office licensing cache Broken add-in Expired token
C. Clear the Office rights management cache.
- Close all Office apps first.
- Then delete this folder (File explorer): C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MSIPC
- After deleting:
- Restart your PC
- Open Word again
- Sign in when prompted
- This forces Word to download fresh rights/licensing info.
D. Update your Microsoft Office.
- Word > File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
E. Try to open your file on Word online.
- Upload your file to OneDrive.
- Try to open in browser Word Online.
If the label is truly Outdated, the file may be protected by a company that no longer exists, a tenant you no longer belong to, a retired protection template. There is no technical bypass for this, only the organization can.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Jhun
