Unable to request a call back but need to speak with an agent

Hi, I've been trying to get through to a customer service agent since my issue is a bit complicated and can't be addressed through the online help options. I purchased Office 2021 four years ago, but the email address I used to buy it has been deactivated, which means I can no longer use Office products.

Because my email account is linked to my old university, I can't access the live chat or request a call back. I get a message saying I need to contact my administrator, which I have done.

However, the university IT department can't help me and told me to speak with Microsoft. But your website won't let me contact you, and all the automated options on your phone lines lead back to the website.

Please can you advise how I can get the support I need.

Many thanks

    Hi,

Thank you for the update. I understand that you don’t have a personal Microsoft account and still need to speak with an agent to reactivate your Office purchase.

Microsoft’s support system requires customers to sign in with an active Microsoft account before they can access live chat or request a callback. This is why the system won’t let you proceed your original Office 2021 license was tied to a school account, and Microsoft’s support tools won’t allow contact unless you are signed in with a valid personal account. The good news is that once you sign in with any personal Microsoft account (for example an Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Gmail, or Yahoo address registered as a Microsoft account), you can reach Microsoft’s consumer support directly, including phone and chat options. From there, an agent can assist you with reactivation issues related to Office 2021, including cases where the original email address can’t be accessed anymore. If you prefer phone support, Microsoft also publishes regional customer service phone numbers, which you can call without signing in. These numbers are available publicly and support home users with installation and activation issues for Office products.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. I understand that you purchased Office 2021 several years ago and can no longer use it because the email tied to your license has been deactivated. I also see that you’ve attempted to contact support but keep being redirected to your former university administrator, who is unable to assist you.

According to Microsoft’s official guidance, support options depend on the type of account associated with the product. Work or school accounts (university‑issued emails) require an active administrator to contact Microsoft support on your behalf, while personal Microsoft accounts allow direct support access. When an educational institution deactivates an account, Microsoft systems still classify it as a school account, which blocks direct chat or callback options unless you sign in with a personal Microsoft account instead.

To reach Microsoft directly, you’ll need to sign in using an active personal Microsoft account from the Contact Support page. Once signed in, you can select the Office category and access live chat or phone support, which provides more flexible options than the automated flows. Microsoft Q&A specialists also recommend using the Contact Support portal and selecting your region’s phone number or opening a chat session when callback options fail to appear.

Do you currently have a personal Microsoft account (such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or a Gmail address registered as a Microsoft account) that you can use to sign in to the support portal?

If you’d like, I can guide you step‑by‑step through the correct support path once you confirm which account you can sign in with. Please feel free to follow up I’m here to help you get connected with the right support team.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

To resolve your issue with accessing support for your Office 2021 purchase, you can try the following steps:

    1. Contact Microsoft Support Directly: Since your email is deactivated and you cannot access the live chat or request a call back, you can try reaching out to Microsoft support through their hotline. When you call, follow the prompts to indicate that you are a business user and need technical support.
    2. Use the "Get Help" Feature: If you can access any Microsoft product, try using the "Get Help" feature. Type "Chat with an agent" in the search bar and follow the prompts to connect with a live agent.
    3. Create a New Microsoft Account: If you cannot resolve the issue through your old email, consider creating a new Microsoft account. This will allow you to access the support options available for new accounts, and you can explain your situation to the support team.
    4. Trial Microsoft 365 Tenant: As a workaround, you could create a trial Microsoft 365 tenant. This will allow you to log in and submit a support request regarding your issue with the old account. Make sure to provide all necessary details about your locked account when you raise the ticket.
    5. Contact University IT Again: If possible, ask your university IT department if they can escalate the issue or provide you with a direct contact for Microsoft support.

These steps should help you connect with Microsoft support to resolve your issue with Office 2021.
