Hello,

I tried to purchase Microsoft 365 Student subscription. The payment failed once and I removed my card. Now I am unable to add my card again and I think my account may be temporarily blocked for billing.

I have received the academic verification email, but I cannot activate the student benefit.

Please help me remove any payment restrictions and allow me to add my card again.

Thank you.

    Hi @Sandaru Matharage,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how difficult it can be when a payment fails and you’re unable to re‑add your card - especially after successfully completing your academic verification.

Here are suggestion steps you can try:

A/ Get your billing profile unblocked so you can add a card

    1. Try adding the card from the direct Payments page

Go to the Microsoft billing page and add the card there: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments. If you still see the message “Check that all fields are correct or try a different card,” continue with the next steps.

    2. Check for any past‑due balance

Visit Services & Subscriptions in your account. If you have a past‑due subscription, please pay it first because overdue balances can prevent new payment methods from being added.

    3. Verify your region settings

Make sure the country/region of your Microsoft account matches the issuing country of your card. A region mismatch is one of the most common reasons cards are rejected.

    4. Try another browser or an InPrivate/Incognito window

This helps rule out browser cache or session issues.

If the card still cannot be added, please contact the Billing team:

Follow these steps so Microsoft Support can check and reset your billing profile:

    • Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus and sign in your account.
    • Type “Billing and payment” in the search box
    • Select Get help > Contact Support
    • Choose:
      • Product: Microsoft 365 and Office
      • Category: Billing and payment updates
      • Select Confirm and then choose Chat or Request a call

This will connect you to the team that can review and unblock your billing profile.

    B/ Activate the student benefit

The activation steps depend on whether you are using:

    • Your school‑provided student account, or
    • Your personal Microsoft account that you verified with your academic email

For the fastest resolution, please contact Microsoft Support directly so they can check your account type and complete the activation for you. You can submit a support request here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus.

Once submitted, Microsoft Support will guide you through the correct activation flow and help finalize your student benefits.

We truly appreciate your understanding as we do our best to support you here. Please note that our ability to assist with billing-related issues in this forum is limited, as we don’t have access to the secure, account-specific tools needed to make changes to payment methods or view subscription details.

I hope this information helps. Please try the steps and let me know whether they resolve the issue. If the problem persists, we can work together to find a solution.

If you're unable to activate your Microsoft 365 Student subscription after a failed payment and suspect that your account may be temporarily blocked for billing, here are some steps you can take:

    1. Check Your Subscription Status: Ensure that your subscription is still active and not expired. You can do this by logging into your Microsoft 365 account and checking the subscription details.
    2. Contact Microsoft Support: Since you believe there may be a payment restriction on your account, it's best to contact Microsoft Support directly. They can provide specific information regarding your account status and any restrictions that may be in place.
    3. Try Adding Your Card Again: If your account is not blocked, try adding your payment method again. Ensure that the card details are entered correctly and that there are no issues with the card itself.
    4. Check for Notifications: Look for any notifications in your Microsoft account that may indicate why you cannot add your card again. Sometimes, additional verification may be required.
    5. Verify Your Academic Status: Since you received an academic verification email, ensure that you have completed any necessary steps to confirm your eligibility for the student benefit.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, Microsoft Support will be your best resource for further assistance.
