FIles Missing from OneDrive File

I just recently noticed a master file no longer contains any documents that were there prior to 1/30/26. The file was full with about 80 items, it is no longer in its original location and there is only one file, which does not belong.

I checked the recycle bin, nothing was deleted and there is no version history available to try an restore from.

How can I find out what happened to my files and where they went?

I must have accidentally deleted a folder with all my pictures from the last fifteen years on OneDrive. Unfortunately, I emptied the rubbish bin afterwards. I wrongly thought of OneDrive as a backup system but it also removed the files from my hard drive because it is synchronized. I imagined that I could just go back to an earlier date to restore the file but this did not work. I have tried every kind of document retrieval system (Disk Drill, Toolkit, Data Rescue, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard). There is no second rubbish bin listed at the bottom of my rubbish bin. It seems impossible to get customer support in this automated system belonging to a monopoly. I am at my wit's end.

You cannot recover files from OneDrive if you have permanently deleted them from the recycle bin. I suggest taking your computer with hard drive to a professional data recovery service. Tell them what you have tried and ask whether they can recover the files.

If you are not backing up your Documents folder to OneDrive, be sure to check the Documents folder at C:\Users\username\Documents for your missing files. I suggest you back up the Documents folder if you haven't already. Go to Manage Backup and check.

Thank you for the suggestion, however this is not applicable to my situation. My files were saved directly to OneDrive as cloud storage and were never stored locally in the Documents folder.

If you have no version history online at onedrive.com, I'm not sure how you can recover your files without a local backup.

Thank you but I have tried the restore option several times. An earlier version of the folder did not appear. OneDrive lulls customers into a false sense of security. It is not a back up. I gather there are versions in which there is a second rubbish bin listed in the bottom left hand corner when you open the rubbish bin. I did not have this feature. The only guarantee is to save onto an external hard drive with Mac is to backup on an external hard drive or saving to iCloud or Google. I did find a way to contact customer support. They essentially confirmed that there is nothing that can be done. It means the loss of hundred of hours of work, carefully curating pictures and putting them into folders, as well as treasured memories, including the last decade of pictures of my now deceased parents. It is heartbreaking, similar to a fire or hurricane damage. Microsoft 365 forces customers to use OneDrive which essentially hijacks a computer and can remove folders/documents from the hard drive when it is synchronized. I post this as a warning. Apple and Microsoft should emphasize that an external backup is. essential.

The second-stage recycle bin is only available on business accounts.
