When you reinstall Windows, the system may prompt you for a product key if it cannot automatically retrieve the digital license associated with your Microsoft account. Here are some steps you can take to find your product key:
- Check Your Old Drive: If you still have access to the old installation, you can retrieve the product key by running a command in an elevated Command Prompt. Alternatively, you can use third-party key-finder utilities to extract the key from the registry hive of the old drive.
- Microsoft Account: If your previous Windows installation was activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, signing in with that same account on the new installation should automatically reactivate Windows without needing to enter the key manually.
- OEM Devices: If your device is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) device, the product key may be embedded in the firmware (BIOS/UEFI) and can be retrieved automatically during the installation process.
If you are unable to retrieve the product key using these methods, you may need to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.
