what is "Dr.KEY" on windows 11 and is it needed. I just found it on my pc in January 2026

    Hi Molly,

    This appears to be a product key extractor - maybe you should scan your computer using Malwarebytes, since a few sites show it as PUP(Unwanted Program). There is no need to use that in my opinion, since the keys for all Microsoft products are tied to the account.

    Dr.KEY is a third-party product key recovery tool, not a standard part of Windows 11.

    It is designed to scan your PC and extract the 25-digit license keys for Windows, Microsoft Office, and other paid software. If you found it on your computer in January 2026 and didn't install it yourself, it was likely bundled with another software package or installed by a technician to assist with a system activation or transfer.

    You do not need Dr.KEY for your computer to function. Windows 11 handles its own activation automatically using "Digital Licenses" tied to your hardware or Microsoft Account.
