If Microsoft Word is not running, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:
- Repair Office Installation: Exit all Office applications and run an Online Repair. This often resolves issues with Office applications. You can do this by going to Settings > Apps, finding Microsoft Office, selecting it, and choosing Modify > Online Repair.
- Check for Updates: Ensure that both Windows and your version of Office are up to date. This can help fix any compatibility issues.
- Start Word in Safe Mode: You can start Word in Safe Mode to see if the issue is caused by add-ins. To do this, hold down the Ctrl key while starting Word, or you can run
winword /safe from the Run dialog.
- Delete Word Data Registry Subkey: If the problem persists, you might need to delete the Word Data registry subkey. Make sure to back up the registry before making changes. The path for Word 2016 or later is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Data.
- Replace Normal.dotm Template: If Word still won't start, try renaming the Normal.dotm file. This file is located in
%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\. You can rename it to OldNormal.dotm.
- Disable Add-ins: Sometimes, add-ins can cause Word not to start. You can disable them by renaming files in the Startup folder located in
%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to uninstall and then reinstall Office.
