Windows 11 no longer pairs with Sonos speaker after recent update

Windows 11 on my laptop can't pair with my Sonos speaker anymore. It worked fine for months, until a recent Windows UPdate. My laptop can find all other Bluetooth devices, but in Windows Media player, Sonos doesn't show up. in Bluetooth & Devices in my Windows 11 Settings, Windows can find the Sonos speaker and connect to it, but it shows up as "Disconnected" in the list of Bluetooth devices, and it can't play music anymore.

I tried installing Phonos on my latop but I think it's meant for phones. I can play radio stations from the internet on my Sonos from my laptop from Phonos, but I can't cast music from windows Media (regular or legacy) to Sonos or Phonos. I've enabled sharing with everyone on my music folder in file Explorer.

    Hi Maureen O'Donnell,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

From what you described, Phonos and Sonos speakers are designed to play music over Wi‑Fi using the Sonos system, not to receive live audio from Windows apps like Windows Media Player. Enabling Music folder sharing allows Sonos to index and play files directly, but it does not let Windows Media Player cast or stream audio to Sonos in real time. Internet radio works in Phonos because it streams directly to Sonos, not from the laptop.

Here are some possible options that you can consider in this case:

    1, Use the Sonos app

    • Add your local music library in the Sonos desktop app.
    • Play music or internet radio directly from Sonos for the most reliable experience.

2, Use Line‑In (if your Sonos model supports it)

    • Connect the laptop’s audio output to the Sonos Line‑In port.
    • Select Line‑In from the Sonos app to play laptop audio.

It's optional but recommended to check for Bluetooth drivers update

    • Open Device Manager > Bluetooth > update your Bluetooth adapter.
    • Restart the laptop after updating.

It seems that after a recent Windows update, your laptop is having trouble maintaining a connection with your Sonos speaker. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Check Bluetooth Settings: Ensure that Bluetooth is enabled on your laptop and that the Sonos speaker is in pairing mode. You can also try removing the Sonos speaker from your Bluetooth devices list and then re-pairing it.
    2. Update Drivers: Make sure that your Bluetooth drivers are up to date. You can check this in Device Manager. If necessary, visit the manufacturer's website to download the latest drivers.
    3. Run Bluetooth Troubleshooter: Windows 11 has a built-in troubleshooter for Bluetooth issues. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter to see if it can identify and fix the problem.
    4. Check for Windows Updates: Sometimes, additional updates are released to fix issues introduced by previous updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any available updates.
    5. Sonos App: Since you mentioned using Phonos, consider using the official Sonos app for Windows if available. This might provide better compatibility and functionality for streaming music.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be worth checking forums or support pages specific to Sonos for any known issues related to the recent Windows update.
