Resetting my Windows 10 laptop to sell

After I performed a full reset (to remove everything), the system went through the process without any pauses or prompts to do anything and seemed to complete the job successfully. However, I have now ended with a blank screen and a prompt to enter my password. The remove everything option mentioned that all data, accounts and passwords would be removed. So, what am I supposed to do know?

In that case, just add a simple password to the account, then provide the new owner with that password, then, when they add their own Microsoft account details to the new user account, their password for their Microsoft account will be used to log into Windows.

Thank you, that worked, and I now have a new Administrator Local Account. Now my problem is, what will a potential buyer of this computer think about this setup? I will have to provide the new password details for them to do that, I suppose, and how do I check that there is no trace of my records on this computer?

Is that a Windows login screen you are seeing to enter your password, and if so, is your original Microsoft account details indicated on that screen?

    If so, log into Windows.

Then follow these steps to create a new Local user account and delete your user account.

    Open the Settings App

Go to Accounts - Family and other People

Click 'Add someone else to this PC'

Follow the prompts to create a new account and do not provide any Microsoft account details, so a Local account is created.

    Close the settings app

Log out of your user account

    Log into your new account

Click the Start Button, type netplwiz and hit Enter

In the resulting dialog, select the old account and click 'Remove'

That's It, your new Admin Account will replace the old account

The restarting method outlined above does not work. No matter how many times I press the Start button on/off, it only brings up the password prompt, and I cannot access the Windows Recovery Environment. If I enter my password, will Windows open? but then, how do I remove my account details?

It seems that after performing a full reset on your Windows 10 laptop, you are encountering a blank screen with a prompt for a password. This situation can occur if the reset process did not complete properly or if the system is expecting a user account to log in.

Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

    1. Try Restarting: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Hold down the power button until the laptop turns off, then turn it back on.
    2. Access Recovery Options: If the restart does not help, you can try to access the recovery options:
      • Turn on your laptop and as soon as it starts, press and hold the power button to turn it off again. Repeat this process 2-3 times until you see the Windows Recovery Environment.
      • From there, you can choose Troubleshoot, then Reset this PC again, and select the option to remove everything.
    3. Use Installation Media: If you have a Windows installation USB or DVD, you can boot from it and choose the option to repair your computer. This might allow you to reset the device properly.
    4. Contact Support: If none of these options work, it may be best to contact Microsoft Support or the manufacturer of your laptop for further assistance.

Make sure you have any necessary recovery media or backups if you need to perform additional recovery steps.
