Microsoft Word 2003 stopped working a couple weeks ago. HELP ME PLEASE. Bad Update?

I'm trying to run Microsoft Word 2003. It momentarily opens (app shows a bit irregular) then closes. A couple of times an info box opens asking if I want to open in safe mode. Clicking OK opens the app and it functions OK in the few docs I have opened. It has been running fine until a couple weeks ago and I suspect a Windows update may be to blame. Any help out there??

Much thanks in advance ...

    Hello Dan Me,

Since safe mode is also failing, the issue is likely deeper than a simple add-in conflict. These are the most realistic options at this point:

    1. Open Run (Win + R), type winword /a and hit Enter — this launches Word bypassing both add-ins and registry customizations, which is a step beyond standard safe mode.
    2. Right-click the Word shortcut → PropertiesCompatibility tab → set compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
    3. If neither works, a clean reinstall of Office 2003 with SP3 applied immediately after is worth attempting.

That said, Windows 11 has had significant changes to legacy shell components and Office 2003 is well beyond its supported lifespan. You can consider upgrading to a modern version (Office 2024, Microsoft 365) as the reliable long-term path forward.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with Microsoft Word 2003, which may be related to a recent Windows update. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Run Word in Safe Mode: Since you mentioned that Word functions in Safe Mode, you can continue to use it this way temporarily. To open Word in Safe Mode, hold down the Ctrl key while starting Word.
    2. Disable Add-ins: Sometimes, add-ins can cause issues. In Safe Mode, go to Tools > Templates and Add-ins and disable any add-ins that are enabled.
    3. Repair Office Installation: If the issue persists, consider repairing your Office installation. You can do this by going to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, selecting Microsoft Office, and choosing the repair option.
    4. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Office and Windows are both up to date. Sometimes, additional updates can resolve compatibility issues.
    5. Reinstall Office: If none of the above steps work, you may need to uninstall and then reinstall Microsoft Office 2003.

If the problem continues after trying these steps, it could be beneficial to check forums or support sites for any known issues related to the specific Windows update you suspect may have caused the problem.
