Locked out of personal OneDrive account linked to expired student email

Hi Microsoft Community,

I'm reaching out because I've been locked out of my personal Microsoft account and OneDrive, and I need help recovering access to my files.

Here's the situation:

Several years ago, my university did not have a Microsoft institutional agreement. During that time, I independently registered for Microsoft's student benefits using my university email address. This account was not tied to or managed by my university, it was a personal Microsoft account that I created on my own.

I have been using this account as my primary personal OneDrive storage for years and have a large amount of important personal files stored there, including documents, photos, and other irreplaceable data.

Recently, my university entered into a Microsoft for Education agreement. Because my student email address has long since expired, it appears that my personal Microsoft account has been absorbed into or locked by the university's new Microsoft tenant. I am now unable to sign in or access any of my personal files.

To be clear:

  • I created this Microsoft account independently, before my university had any Microsoft agreement.
  • The account contains purely personal data, not university-related material.
  • My student email has been expired for a long time, so I cannot use university channels to regain access.
  • The university's new Microsoft tenant appears to have overridden my personal account access.

I would greatly appreciate your help with either:

  1. Restoring my access to the personal Microsoft account so I can retrieve my files, or
  2. Migrating or transferring my OneDrive data to a different Microsoft account that I control.

Please let me know what steps I can take to resolve this.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Hello. When you try signing in, does it automatically take you to a university-branded sign-in page? If it stays on the normal Microsoft sign-in screen, there’s still a chance it’s recognized as a personal account.

If the university fully verified and claimed the domain, and the account didn’t have updated recovery details like a backup email or phone number, your recovery options are unfortunately very limited. Microsoft can’t move or release OneDrive data unless the account ownership can be properly verified.

Also, please keep in mind this is a community forum. We don’t have access to Microsoft’s internal systems or tools. We can only offer guidance and troubleshooting steps based on what’s publicly available.
