    Hi slap happy house hippo,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that the security update KB5077181 has failed to install multiple times and your Windows 11 device is responding very slowly, and you are concerned the two issues may be related.

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.

Before that, I’d like to narrow this down a bit:

1, Are you currently using a Windows Insider build or the standard Windows 11 release channel?

2, Approximately how much free space is available on your system drive?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

    1, Temporarily pause Windows Update

    • Open Settings
    • Go to Windows Update
    • Select Pause updates and choose the maximum available duration

2, Run DISM to repair the Windows image

    • Open Start
    • Search for Command Prompt
    • Run it as administrator
    • Enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and let it complete

3, Perform a clean boot to reduce system load during update

    • Open Start
    • Search for System Configuration
    • On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then Disable all
    • Restart the device and observe performance

    4, Reduce startup impact

    • Open Task Manager
    • Go to the Startup tab
    • Disable non‑essential startup items
    • Restart the device

5, Check available storage and clean temporary files

    • Open Settings
    • Go to System
    • Select Storage
    • Use Temporary files to remove unnecessary data

6, Manually install the update from Microsoft Update Catalog

    • Search for KB5077181 on the Microsoft Update Catalog website
    • Download the version matching your system architecture
    • Install it while Windows Update is paused

    Hello,

You can first try the AI method to see if it resolves your update issue.

Regarding your computer lagging, could you please describe the specific situation? Generally, Windows updates do not cause the computer to slow down. When your computer is running slowly, please open Task Manager and provide a screenshot. I can then check the processes and hardware usage to determine the cause of the lag.

    Thank you.

If the security update (KB5077181) has failed to install multiple times, it could be causing your system to slow down. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter: This built-in tool can help identify and fix problems with Windows Update. You can access it by going to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update.
    2. Check for Corrupted Files: Run the System File Checker tool to check for corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow, then press Enter. This process may take some time.
    3. Reset Windows Update Components: Sometimes, the Windows Update components can become corrupted. You can reset them by following these steps:
      • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
      • Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
             net stop wuauserv
             net stop cryptSvc
             net stop bits
             net stop msiserver
             net start wuauserv
             net start cryptSvc
             net start bits
             net start msiserver

    4. Uninstall the Update: If you want to cancel the pending update, you can uninstall it by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates. Look for KB5077181 and uninstall it.
    5. Check Your Disk Space: Ensure that you have enough disk space available, as insufficient space can cause updates to fail.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consider contacting Microsoft Support for further assistance.
