    Dear Barbara Sheffield

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand it can be frustrating when there is no sound at all across all programs. To help narrow this down, could you please share a few details first?

    • Which Windows version are you using (Windows 10 or Windows 11)?
    • Are you using laptop speakers, a wired headset (3.5mm/USB), Bluetooth, or HDMI/monitor audio?
    • Did this start after any recent changes (Windows Update, driver update, new headset/speaker, or plugging in a new device)?
    • In Settings > System > Sound, what device is selected under Output?
    • When you click Test (in Sound settings), do you hear a tone or see any error?

In the meantime, here are a few basic steps you can try:

    1. Check mute/volume and Volume Mixer
    • Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and confirm it’s not muted and the volume is above 0.
    • Right-click the speaker icon > Open volume mixer and confirm the correct output device is selected and System Sounds and the app you’re testing are not set to 0 or muted
    1. Confirm the correct output device
    • Go to Settings > System > Sound
    • Under Output, select your intended device (e.g., Speakers/Headphones)
    • Click Test to verify sound

If you’re connected to Bluetooth or HDMI, Windows may route audio there. Please try disconnecting Bluetooth/HDMI temporarily and re-test.

    1. Run the built-in audio troubleshooter
    • Go to Settings > System > Sound > Troubleshoot (or Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Playing Audio depending on Windows version)
    1. Restart Windows Audio services
    • Press Win + R, type services.msc, then press Enter
    • Find and Restart: Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
    • Restart the PC and test again
    1. Quick driver check (Device Manager)
    • Right-click Start > Device Manager
    • Expand Sound, video and game controllers
    • Right-click your audio device > Update driver
    • Restart the PC and test again

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope the steps above help restore audio on your device and identify whether the issue is related to the selected output, Windows audio services, or the audio driver. Wishing you a smooth experience getting sound back across your apps and returning to normal use as soon as possible.
