Dear @Paul Revel,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.
Thank you for describing the issue so clearly. What you’re experiencing is understandable and reasonable, and you’re not missing a feature or doing anything wrong.
In PowerPoint, the “Add Vertical Guide” and “Add Horizontal Guide” commands are not shown as direct menu items when you click Grid & Guides. Instead, they are located in a submenu that only appears when you hover, which is easy to miss.
This behavior is by design in the PowerPoint UI and has existed for several versions. It’s a usability limitation rather than a bug or a licensing issue, and it can be confusing if the default guides were previously removed.
Please try the following exactly:
- Right‑click on a blank area of the slide canvas (not on an object).
- Move your mouse over Grid & Guides, do not click it immediately.
- Hover over the arrow or the right side of Grid & Guides.
- A secondary (fly‑out) menu will appear.
- From that submenu, select Add Vertical Guide or Add Horizontal Guide.
Once at least one guide exists, you can right‑click directly on a guide to add more, move them, or delete them.
I hope this information helps point you in the right direction. If you run into any issues while trying the steps, or if something still doesn’t feel quite right, please don’t hesitate to reach out again. I’ll do my best to support you however I can.
Looking forward to hearing back from you with any updates or additional details.
Warm regards,
