I have a Sharepoint account/site for my own business but a client wants me to log in to theirs for documents sharing. They have sent me the usual invitation but every time I click the link to login it takes me to my own Sharepoint site. How can I access both on the one pc. I have tried using a different browser and incognito mode but it always takes me to my site.

    Hi @Marc Reed

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

This is a very common SharePoint, Microsoft 365 multi‑tenant sign‑in behavior, and nothing is wrong with your PC. What you’re seeing is caused by Microsoft’s single sign‑on (SSO) automatically sending you to your “home” tenant, even when you click a client’s SharePoint invitation.

When you sign in to Microsoft 365, SharePoint remembers your home tenant (your own business). If your client invited you as an external guest, Microsoft may still redirect you back to your own SharePoint because:

    • You’re already authenticated to your home tenant
    • The browser silently reuses that session
    • Incognito or another browser does not always override Microsoft’s identity cache

As of now, the most reliable first step is using browser profiles:

Browser profiles create completely separate identity containers, which is different from Incognito.

    • Profile A > your business SharePoint
    • Profile B > your client’s SharePoint
    • Both stay signed in at the same time

This is the recommended approach for working across multiple tenants. Each browser has a different name for these modes, but they all work very similarly,.

While Guest and Private modes are very similar, there are some slight differences to be aware of. Namely, Private modes will make bookmarks, settings, and shortcuts, etc. available from the main browser profile where guest modes do not carry these settings across, which is how you start with a blank profile. By using profiles, you can create a distinct container for each account context, separating out authentication tokens, favorites, bookmarks, etc. In other words, you can connect to several different accounts in different tenants simultaneously using a single browser. This makes it very easy to work in multiple tenants and switch between them at will without losing open pages by closing the browser.

    Example (Edge):

    • Edge > Profile icon > Add profile

    User's image

    • Open the client’s SharePoint link only in that profile
    • Sign in when prompted

However, even with this workaround, it could still be greatly impacting to your workflow, I highly recommend submitting a suggestion directly for SharePoint by navigating to: SharePoint · Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.

To access multiple SharePoint accounts on the same PC, you can try the following steps:

    1. Use Different Profiles in Edge: If you are using Microsoft Edge, consider creating separate profiles for each account. This allows you to maintain separate sessions for each account without interference. Make sure to sign into each profile with the respective SharePoint account.
    2. Add Account to Windows: You can add your client's account to Windows under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. This will allow Windows to manage the sign-in tokens correctly for both accounts.
    3. Use InPrivate Mode: If you haven't already, try accessing the client's SharePoint site using InPrivate mode in Edge or Incognito mode in Chrome. This can help isolate the session from your existing account.
    4. Clear Browser Cache: If you continue to face issues, clear your browser cache. Sometimes, cached data can cause the browser to redirect to the wrong account.
    5. Sign Out and Retry: Make sure to sign out of your own SharePoint account completely before clicking the invitation link again. This can help ensure that the correct account is being used.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider using a different browser altogether, such as Firefox or Chrome, to access the client's SharePoint site.
