Additional meeting and call-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for business
Hi @Caroline H
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.
Thank you sincerely for taking the time to share your situation.
I completely understand how challenging it can be when you're trying to manage breakout rooms, only to find that some participants can’t be assigned. Please rest assured, you’re not doing anything wrong.
Currently, Microsoft Teams has a policy where "Personal" accounts are treated as incompatible external users for complex features like Breakout Rooms.
Here are the two specific ways to bypass this restriction:
Option 1: Join as "Anonymous" participant
If you are currently in the meeting or about to join, you can bypass the account restriction by joining as an "Anonymous" guest instead of signing in with your Personal account.
- Log out of your Teams app (or open an Incognito/Private browser window).
- Click the meeting link.
- When asked how to join, choose "Continue on this browser" (use Edge or Chrome).
- Important: When it asks you to sign in, do not sign in. Instead, simply type your name and click "Join now".
Result: You will enter the meeting as an "Unverified" guest. The system allows these anonymous guests to be moved to breakout rooms, whereas signed-in "Personal" accounts are blocked.
Option 2: The "Guest" Access (Permanent Fix)
If this is a recurring meeting, you should ask the organizer to add you properly to their system.
- Ask the organizer to add your personal email address to their "Team" or their Microsoft 365 Tenant as a Guest.
- Once you accept the email invitation, you will be able to switch your Teams app to their "Organization" view (you will see a dropdown next to your profile picture to switch tenants).
When you join from inside their tenant context, you will fully support breakout rooms.
I recommend using Option 1 for immediate access to the breakout rooms. However, if you plan to attend these meetings regularly, Option 2 is the best long-term solution to prevent this error from returning. Please let me know if this workaround resolves the issue for you.
Note: Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.
I hope this information is useful. Additionally, as other users have raised similar concerns and may not be aware of where to share their feedback, I hope this response helps clarify the situation and suggests a potential next step. Highlighting this information can make it more visible to others in the community who may be facing the same issue, making it easier for them to find guidance and contribute their feedback as well.
Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
I look forward to your thoughts on this.
