Excel Birthdate Interpretation Issues

My business has payroll data coming to me with birthdates as early as 1942... Excel interprets this data as 2042 unless you change the regional settings (Excel default: 1950-2049). I have gone in and changed the range settings for all of my computers (1939-2040), but wonder why we as users need to do this? Why isn't this something that Excel addresses in updates. Annually they should move their default forward!

I sent a file with correct dates to a customer and their computer changed the date 2042. How do you stop this issue?

    Hi @Lori Oakley

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding the issue where Excel interprets dates such as 1942 as 2042, this behavior is expected due to how Excel handles two digit year numbers.

At this time, Excel does not provide a built‑in setting to independently control or override how two‑digit years are interpreted. This behavior is determined by Windows’ system level date settings, and Excel follows those settings automatically. As a result, if the Windows default range is 1950–2049, entering a year such as “42” will be interpreted as 2042. This limitation applies across all versions of Excel and cannot be changed within the application itself.

I understand how this can cause real issues especially in scenarios like yours where historical birthdates fall outside the Windows default range. It would certainly be useful if Excel offered its own option or if Windows automatically shifted the interpretation range forward each year.

I agree that having Excel provide more control over two‑digit year handling could improve usability.
The best way to request this capability is to submit feedback directly to Microsoft so the product team can review and evaluate the suggestion. This is the most effective path forward, as the Microsoft Teams product team actively monitors customer feedback, and many features and product improvements are driven by customer suggestions.

How to submit your suggestion to Microsoft

    1. Visit the Microsoft Feedback Portal
    2. Go to Excel · Community
    3. Select Send feedback  User's image
    4. Clearly describe your request  (for example: “Allow Excel to define its own two‑digit year conversion range instead of relying on Windows settings.”)

As forum moderators, we don’t have the ability to change or override Teams product design or feature limitations, but we’re always happy to clarify current behavior and guide you to the appropriate feedback channels.

Thank you again for your time and understanding. While this response may not provide an immediate workaround, I hope it clearly explains what is and isn’t currently possible.
