Subscriptions not registering

I am contacting you regarding ongoing issues with my Microsoft 365 subscription.

I recently subscribed to Microsoft 365 Business Basic, however I am experiencing the following problems:

I am unable to log into my account properly. I signed up using my Outlook email address, but I cannot access the account as expected.

Because I cannot log in to the business portal, I am unable to:

Access Word and Excel

Check my subscription details

Turn off auto-renewal

View billing information

I received a confirmation email that I subscribed, but I have not received a formal invoice.

I previously contacted support but was advised they could not assist (as its business and they were for personal). I have requested a callback and am currently waiting (4 days now)

Please urgently:

Confirm which subscription is active under my email address and how I log in because when I log it it logs into the personal account with no active subscriptions.

Clarify whether this plan includes desktop Word and Excel

Assist me in regaining access to my account

Advise how to cancel or change the subscription if needed

I would appreciate prompt assistance in resolving this matter.

Kind regards,

To address your issues with your Microsoft 365 Business Basic subscription:

    1. Account Access: It seems you are logging into a personal account instead of your business account. Ensure you are using the correct email associated with your business subscription. If you continue to have trouble, you may need to contact Microsoft support specifically for business accounts, as they have tools to assist with account recovery.
    2. Subscription Details: You can check the status of your subscription by logging into the Microsoft 365 Admin Center with the correct business account. If you are unable to access it, contacting support will be necessary to confirm which subscription is active under your email address.
    3. Desktop Applications: The Microsoft 365 Business Basic plan does not include the desktop versions of Word and Excel; it primarily provides online access to these applications. If you need the desktop versions, you may need to consider upgrading to a different plan.
    4. Regaining Access: Since you are experiencing issues with logging in, contacting the Microsoft Data Protection team may be necessary. They can help verify your identity and regain access to your account.
    5. Canceling or Changing Subscription: If you need to cancel or change your subscription, you will typically do this through the Admin Center once you regain access. If you cannot access your account, support can assist you with this process as well.

I recommend following up with Microsoft support for business accounts to expedite the resolution of your issues.

    Hi @Jade Wehrman

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I'd love to clarify your current situation a little bit here.

Typically, the account you used to make the purchase is your personal Microsoft account (@hotmail, @gmail, @outlook.com...), which is meant for buying products, managing personal subscriptions, and accessing personal services.

When you purchase a Microsoft 365 business license, Microsoft creates a separate business account (@onmicrosoft.com) for you. This business account is what gives you access to business‑grade tools such as Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, and your company email.

Your personal account is managed solely by you, whereas a business account is created within a business tenant and governed by business‑level security and administrative controls. Even if the purchase was made using your personal account, all business services are associated with the business account. As a result, business subscriptions will not appear under your personal account.

With that in mind, there are two possible scenarios:

Scenario 1: You found the admin credentials for your business tenant in the follow up emails.

This is usually the @onmicrosoft.com account created automatically when you first purchased the license, but it could also be any other admin account you later created and assigned admin roles to. You can find the initial @onmicrosoft.com in the following up email.

In this case, you can use it to sign in to Microsoft 365 admin center and set up your tenant.

Scenario 2: You don't have access to or can't find your admin account:

Since you are the sole administrator, the next recommended step is to contact Microsoft Support. Business subscriptions have a dedicated support channel specifically for business services.

The Microsoft Data Protection Team has tools and processes in place to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts. You can try reaching out to our Global Customer Service phone to raise a request for resetting your authentication method here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user account settings and cannot assist with logging in, resetting passwords, or changing access rights. While we do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues, we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

    You: Authenticator.

A: What products do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

    Verification: Education or company account?

    You: For companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Are there any other administrators in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

You: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me directly to the Data Protection Team.

If you cannot reach a live agent, there is still a workaround, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription.

To set up a new tenant, please follow these steps:

Visit Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the prompts provided. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your previous tenant.

Follow the guided setup process to create a new account for a new tenant.

Once your tenant is created, you should be able to access the support portal and submit your ticket referencing your locked account without further issues.

In your ticket description, you'll need to clearly explain that you're trying to regain access to your previous Microsoft 365 tenant and need help from the Data Protection team. Here's a message you can use or adapt:

"Hello, I’m currently unable to access my previous Microsoft 365 tenant. I’m the global admin, but I’m locked out. I created this new tenant solely to request assistance. I kindly ask to be connected with the Data Protection team to verify my identity and help me recover access to the original tenant.

This is urgent, as I rely on Microsoft 365 for my work and have been unable to operate for several days. I’m available to provide any documentation or verification needed to support the recovery process."

Ticket Support: In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your issue is resolved, as this will help you avoid any accidental billing.
