I Can't update Windows 11 to version 24H2 or 25H2 from 23H2. I have been trying to do this first to 24H2 in November 2024 and to 25H2 since Oct 2025 ( since the help info here says the 25H2 update has all the 24H2 updates included with the 25H2 items). I have run trouble shooters, and it will download and try to install the 25H2, and them at about 75 to 90 % complete, it will say it ran into a problem, back all updates out and reboot and say try again. I have a lot of data on my computer, and have been backing it all up to try a fresh install, but that takes time, lots of time. I just want to update my OS.

    Hi, good day!

Please try performing an In-place Upgrade. It will definitely help in resolving update errors. Performing this can repair broken operating system files while your personal files, settings and installed applications will not be removed.

Few things to check on the PC

    • Unplug all external peripherals except for the Mouse, Keyboard, and LAN cable before starting
    • Disable or uninstall any third-party Antivirus program to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade

If you are having trouble updating from Windows 11 version 23H2 to 24H2 or 25H2, there are a few things to consider:

    1. Compatibility Issues: There may be compatibility holds in place for certain devices that prevent the update from being offered. Check if your device is affected by any known issues or holds that could be causing the update failure.
    2. Troubleshooting Steps: Since you have already run troubleshooters, ensure that you have the latest updates installed for your current version. Sometimes, installing the latest cumulative updates can resolve underlying issues that prevent the upgrade.
    3. Backup Your Data: Since you mentioned that you have a lot of data, continue backing it up. If you decide to perform a fresh install, having a complete backup is crucial to avoid data loss.
    4. Manual Update Options: If the update continues to fail, consider using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or downloading the latest ISO from the Microsoft Software Download page to perform a manual update.
    5. Contact Support: If you continue to experience issues, contacting Microsoft Support may provide additional troubleshooting steps tailored to your specific situation.

Also, keep in mind that sometimes it can take up to 48 hours for the update to be offered after resolving any issues, so patience may be required after making changes or updates.
