Neither of the previous answers specifies that, when you enable Different First Page, you get a separate First Page Header (and Footer). If you have already created the header content in the default Header, you will need to copy or cut it from there and paste it into the First Page Header. If you use Copy, you will then need to delete the content from the Header. If the document has only a single page when you do this, you'll need to add a second page temporarily in order to access the Header. Dear @Jordan Smyth,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I am happy to assist you.

To make the header and footer appear only on the first page, kindly follow the steps below:

Open your document in Microsoft Word.

    Go to the first page.

Double‑click at the top (header area) or bottom (footer area) of the page to open Header & Footer editing.

On the ribbon, under Header & Footer Tools > Design, check Different First Page.

    User's image

Add the header and/or footer content you want on the first page only.

Click Close Header and Footer (or double‑click outside the header/footer).

    As a result:

Page 1 > shows the header and footer

Page 2 and onward > no header or footer

To make the header and footer appear only on the first page of your document, you can follow these steps in Microsoft Word:

    1. Insert Header and Footer: Go to the Insert tab, then click on Header or Footer to add your content.
    2. Open Header & Footer Tools: Once you have inserted the header or footer, the Header & Footer Tools will appear in the ribbon.
    3. Different First Page: In the Options group, check the box that says Different First Page. This will allow you to have a unique header and footer for the first page.
    4. Remove Header and Footer from Subsequent Pages: After checking the Different First Page option, you can leave the header and footer for the first page as is, and simply delete the content from the header and footer sections for the subsequent pages.
    5. Close Header & Footer Tools: Once you are done, click on Close Header and Footer to return to the main document.

By following these steps, your header and footer will only appear on the first page of your document, and will be absent from all other pages.
