Subject: BitLocker Issue with Locked Hard Drives

Hi,

Yesterday, when I turned on my computer, I discovered that several hard drives, including the one with Windows installed, had been locked by BitLocker. I never requested this, and I wasn't even aware that this option existed.

While my Windows 11 Pro is activated, my computer does not appear on my list of devices, making it impossible for me to retrieve the unlock key. I understand that BitLocker can be a useful security feature, but Microsoft has effectively taken control of my hard drives and all the data on them without my consent.

This BitLocker issue is significantly impacting my daily work and the data I store on these drives. I believe Microsoft should provide a workaround for this flaw in the software that enables BitLocker without user permission.

Thank you.

After Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft enabled Bitlocker encryption by default on all new Windows 11 installations, even in the home version of Windows 11.

If your drive(s) are encrypted with Bitlocker, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating situation with BitLocker locking your drives unexpectedly. BitLocker can indeed lock drives under certain conditions, such as entering the wrong PIN too many times or changes to the hardware configuration. Here are some steps you can consider to address the issue:

    1. Recovery Key: If you have previously saved your BitLocker recovery key, you can use it to unlock your drives. This key might be stored in your Microsoft account, printed out, or saved on a USB drive.
    2. Access Recovery Options: If your device is not listed under your Microsoft account, you may need to check if you have any other backups of the recovery key. If you have a work or school account, the key might also be stored in Active Directory.
    3. Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE): If you cannot access your drives normally, you can try using Windows RE to recover access. If Windows RE prompts for the BitLocker recovery key, you will need to provide it to unlock the drives.
    4. Contact Support: If you believe this situation occurred without your consent and you cannot retrieve the key, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for assistance. They may provide additional options or insights into your specific case.

It's important to note that BitLocker is designed to enhance security, but it can lead to access issues if not properly managed. Regularly backing up your recovery keys and understanding the conditions that trigger BitLocker can help prevent future occurrences.
