A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Hi, Nicholas Brits
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
That message usually means OneDrive can “see” a reference to the file, but the actual file can’t be retrieved because it was moved or deleted, a sharing link expired, permissions changed, or (in some work accounts) the underlying document library path was altered.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
Confirm you are in the correct OneDrive account, then search for the files online
Go to OneDrive on the web and use the search bar for the exact filename (or part of it), then check Recent and Shared. This helps when the file still exists in the cloud but is not appearing in the expected folder view.
Check OneDrive Recycle Bin and Personal Vault
In OneDrive on the web, open Recycle bin and restore the files if you see them, then check Personal Vault if you use it. Missing files often end up in one of these places even when they “disappear” from the main folder.
If the files were shared to you, ask the owner to re-share
If these files came from someone else (or a shared folder), the owner may have renamed, moved, or re-permissioned them, or the link may have expired. A fresh share link often fixes access immediately.
Try the web in a clean session
Open an InPrivate/Incognito window, sign in again, or try another browser and clear browser data. This rules out a cached, outdated link or sign-in session that keeps pointing to an older file location.
Refresh the OneDrive sync client
Quit and reopen OneDrive, then use the built-in reset option if it stays stuck. A reset forces OneDrive to rebuild its local index and re-check the cloud for those specific items.
Hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you need further assistance.
