Hyperlinks do not open on OneNote web version

There is an issue with OneNote web version where the hyperlink acts really weird. I have tried few possible methods to make it work but it's frustrating.

  1. Normally clicking on the link does not work
  2. Ctrl+ Click does not work
  3. Right Click on the link and Select Open Link - this works
  4. Once we do open via Open Link the links start working normally with a single click.
However, once I refresh the page it's back to the first step that does not allow to open link

This is not specific to any particular formatting; anyone can test this by adding a link to a text on web version and find this issue

Can someone recommend me if there is a solution to this?

    Hi @Nitin Mishra

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum, and thank you for taking the time to share your situation.

I appreciate how clearly you explained the pattern (normal click doesn’t open, Right‑click > Open link works, then links behave normally until the page is refreshed). I understand how this can interrupt your workflow.

Please try the steps below to migrate the issue:

1/ Quick isolation test (helps confirm whether this is browser/session related)

    • Open OneNote for the web in a Private/Incognito window
    • Then test clicking a hyperlink again.

If links open correctly there, the cause is commonly an extension or cached site data.

2/ Temporarily disable extensions that may intercept clicks/links

    Please disable extensions, especially:

    • Ad blockers (AdBlock/uBlock)
    • Privacy/script blockers (Ghostery/Privacy Badger/NoScript-type tools)
    • “Open links in…” helper extensions

After disabling, refresh OneNote for the web and test the link again.

3/ Short-term option if you need consistent link navigation right away:

If you’re working heavily with links, using Open in OneNote (desktop app) is typically the most consistent experience while we isolate the web behavior.

4/ Since you have checked all the steps, but the issue still persists, I believe Microsoft Support Engineering should step in to investigate further. Please reach out to them directly.

    • Ticket Support: In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center>Support>Help & Support. You can raise support ticket. Please note that you’ll need an account with admin rights to sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
    • Phone Support: Microsoft provides customer service phone numbers based on your region. You can find the appropriate contact number here.

Note: Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.
