    Hi Al Walters

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that your wife’s Windows laptop is asking for the Outlook.com sign-in (Microsoft account) to access Windows features like System Restore and her files, but the attempts to regain access haven’t worked so far.

To avoid repeating the Q&A Assist's response below, could you tell me whether you’ve tried those steps yet, and what happens when you try?

Just to confirm, on the Microsoft sign-in page, does it say "account doesn’t exist" or does it accept the email and then fail at password/verification?

In addition, here's what you can try next:

    1. If you can receive a code (to any listed method), reset the password

You can follow Microsoft’s official password reset flow here: Reset a forgotten Microsoft account password - Microsoft Support

    1. If you can’t reset because you no longer have the recovery phone/email

If you already tried, Microsoft allows retrying recovery and provides guidance to increase success:

    • Go to: https://account.live.com/acsr
    • Enter the locked-out email and an alternate email where Microsoft can contact you.
    • Provide as many accurate details as possible, such as old passwords, frequent contacts/subject lines and submit from a familiar device/location.
    • Wait 24–72 hours for a response. You may refine and resubmit up to twice per day.
    • Please see this official guide to help you fill out the form more accurately: Help with the Microsoft account recovery form - Microsoft Support

For more details, you can see these official support links:

If I have misunderstood your situation, please don't hesitate to clarify, and I will adjust my recommendations accordingly.

Feel free to let me know how it goes and I’d happy to help you further. Thank you so much for your time and understanding.

To regain access to your Outlook.com account, you can follow these steps:

    1. Use the Official Recovery Form: Go to the Microsoft account recovery form and select "I forgot my password." Enter your email address and follow the prompts.
    2. Check for Alternative Sign-in Options: If you have another way to sign in on the password page, try that method. If you can sign in on another device, consider changing your sign-in preferences.
    3. Wait and Retry: If you have attempted to log in too many times, your account may be temporarily locked. It is advisable to wait for about 24 hours before trying again. Avoid making further attempts during this time to prevent resetting the cooldown period.
    4. Fill Out the Account Recovery Form: If you still cannot access your account, fill out the recovery form with as much accurate information as possible, including recent email subjects and contacts.
    5. Contact Microsoft Support: If none of the recovery options work, you can contact Microsoft Support for further assistance. You can sign in with any account to reach out to them, or create a new account if necessary to get support.

By following these steps, you should be able to regain access to your Outlook.com account.
