My save window is blank on an xlsx file. How do I save this file?

I am working on several xlsx files. When I went to save one of the files, the save window is blank. I have tried to use the task manager to kick me out of the file but it will not let me past this blank window.

    Hi @CandyCobb,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

According to your concern, to better understand the issue, could you provide more detailed information about this situation? I appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

    • You mentioned "When I went to save one of the files", does that mean the issue happen with every workbook or only this one file among your several Excel files?
    • Can you create a new blank workbook and try saving, does that also blank?
    • Where are you saving to: local drive, OneDrive/SharePoint or Teams channel, etc.?
    • If possible, please share some screenshots of the issue so I can clearly understand to provide the most appropriate guidance for you.

In the meantime, you can try some basic workarounds:

    1/ Open Excel safe mode

    • Press Windows + R to open Run dialog box and type excel /safe > press OK to run.

    • Then and go to File > Options > Add-ins > select Excel Add-ins > Go > uncheck all listed add-ins and click OK. Repeat the same steps with the COM add-ins

    • Restart Excel and check if the error is gone. Then re-enable the add-ins one by one and restarting Excel each time to find which one causing the error.

    2/ Repair Office

    • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Find Microsoft Office, right-click, and choose Change.
    • Select Quick Repair. If that doesn’t work, try Online Repair.

Please understand that my initial response may not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. I look forward to hearing from you.

I think that… when the Save box goes blank like that, it’s the file‑picker freezing, not ur workbook, so I’d close Excel in TaskMgr and on reopen take the AutoRecover copy and if it doesn’t show,

    look in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles

If the save window in Excel is blank, it may be due to a few potential issues. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the problem:

    1. Minimize and Maximize the Window: Sometimes, simply minimizing and then maximizing the Excel window can refresh the display and allow the save window to appear correctly.
    2. Check for Hidden Sheets: If the workbook appears blank, it might be that a sheet is hidden. You can check this by going to the View tab and selecting Unhide to see if any sheets are hidden.
    3. Disable Hardware Acceleration: Disabling hardware acceleration can sometimes resolve display issues in Excel. To do this:
      • Open any Office program (like Word or Excel).
      • Go to the File tab and select Options.
      • In the Options dialog, select Advanced.
      • Check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration and click OK.
    4. Try Safe Mode: You can start Excel in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. To do this, exit Excel, then hold down the Ctrl key while starting Excel again. When prompted, select Yes to start in Safe Mode. Then try saving your file again.
    5. Permissions: Ensure you have the necessary permissions to save the file in the desired location. You need both read and write permissions for the folder where you are trying to save the file.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to check for any third-party add-ins that could be interfering with Excel's functionality.
