My OneNote Search Notebooks bar has moved and covering up my pages and I don't understand how this happened or why. If this was done on purpose who thought this was a good idea? Please restore or provide steps to move it back.

    Hi @Bishop, Otis

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how difficult it is to open OneNote and suddenly find the Search Notebooks bar covering part of your pages, especially when you didn’t make any changes yourself.

This behavior is the result of a recent OneNote for Windows UI update that moved the search box and its dropdown into the page canvas in certain layouts. Microsoft has since re‑positioned the search dropdown so it no longer covers your notes, but this fix is only available in the updated builds of OneNote.

Below are the quick ways to restore usable behavior and prevent the search overlay from blocking your notes:

1/ Update OneNote to receive the fix (recommended)

The updated interface automatically places the search dropdown in a better position.

To update OneNote/Office on Windows: Open Word (or OneNote) > File > Account > Update Options > Update Now (If you don’t see Update Now, select Enable Updates first.)

This ensures you receive the build where the search dropdown no longer covers your page content.

2/ If you need an immediate workaround before updating

These adjustments help reduce or eliminate the obstruction:

Move the page list to the left:

When the page list is on the left, the search UI appears farther from the content area.

Toggle or resize the Navigation pane:

Temporarily hiding or adjusting the notebook/section pane can create more room.

    • Use the Navigation button in the upper‑left corner to show/hide panels. You can also drag the pane edge to resize it.

    Quickly dismiss the search overlay:

    • Press Esc to close the search UI
    • Use Ctrl + F to search only the current page
    • Use Ctrl + E to search across notebooks: Search notes in OneNote.

I hope this information helps. Please try the steps and let me know whether they resolve the issue. If the problem persists, we can work together to find a solution.

To address the issue of the OneNote Search Notebooks bar covering your pages, you can try the following steps to move it back:

    1. Check the View Options: Sometimes, the layout can change based on the view settings. Look for options in the View menu to adjust the layout.
    2. Resize the Window: If the OneNote window is not maximized, try resizing it or maximizing it to see if that resolves the overlap issue.
    3. Restart OneNote: Close and reopen OneNote to see if the interface resets to its default layout.
    4. Update OneNote: Ensure that you have the latest version of OneNote installed, as updates may fix interface issues.
    5. Reset the Layout: If the problem persists, you may need to reset the layout settings in OneNote. This can usually be done in the options or settings menu.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to check for any known issues or updates from Microsoft regarding the OneNote interface changes.
