Classic Outlook Issues

I am using Outlook Classic with Windows 11.

I have two major issues.

1 - Emails go from new to read without me reading these. If I am gone from my computer I can come back to 30 or 40 read emails...that I haven't read.

2 - My email spam stops working every night and then continues to not work until I block some senders (again for the 100th time). No, they are not in my Safe Senders world.

Please let me know.

Thank you in advance!

    Hello Todd Wallace

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Q&A and for clearly outlining both issues you’re experiencing with Outlook Classic on Windows 11. I understand how frustrating it is when emails are marked as read automatically and when the junk filter stops working consistently. Let’s go through this step by step.

Issue 1: Emails are marked as “Read” automatically

I understand you’ve already tried adjusting the Reading Pane settings, but please go through these exact steps once more so we can confirm everything is correctly configured:

    Check Reading Pane settings

    1. Open Outlook → click File → Options
    2. Select Advanced
    3. Under Outlook panes, click Reading Pane…
    4. Make sure BOTH of the following are unchecked
      • Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane
      • Mark item as read when selection changes
    5. Click OK → OK

If the issue still persists, please try the following:

    1. Check if another device is marking emails as read

    • Sign out of Outlook on all other devices (phones, tablets, other PCs)
    • Keep only your Windows 11 PC signed in
    • Monitor if new emails are still being marked as read automatically

    2. Check Inbox Rules

    • Go to Home → Rules → Manage Rules & Alerts
    • Review all rules carefully
    • Look for any rule that includes “mark as read”
    • Disable or delete any suspicious rules
    • Restart Outlook and test

    3. Disable Add-ins

    • Go to File → Options → Add-ins
    • At the bottom, select COM Add-ins → click Go
    • Uncheck all add-ins → click OK
    • Restart Outlook and test

If the issue stops, re-enable add-ins one at a time to identify the cause.

    4. Create a new Outlook profile
A corrupted profile can cause persistent issues:

    • Close Outlook
    • Press Windows + R, type control mlcfg32.cpl, press Enter
    • Click Show Profiles → Add
    • Create a new profile and add your account
    • Set it as default (or choose prompt for profile)
    • Open Outlook and test

    5. Run Outlook in Safe Mode

    • Close Outlook
    • Press Windows + R, type outlook.exe /safe, press Enter
    • Test behavior in Safe Mode

If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, it is likely caused by an add-in or customization.

Issue 2: Junk/Spam filter stops working

This behavior is often related to rules or corrupted junk filter settings. Please try the following:

    1. Recreate the Junk Email rule

    • Go to Home → Rules → Manage Rules & Alerts
    • Look for a rule named “Junk E-mail” (usually at the bottom)
    • Select it → Delete
    • Restart Outlook
    • Go to Junk → Junk E-mail Options and set the filter level to High

    2. Clean up Safe/Blocked Senders lists
Large or corrupted lists can affect filtering:

    • Go to Junk → Junk E-mail Options
    • Under Safe Senders, remove unnecessary entries
    • Under Blocked Senders, verify your blocked addresses are still there (re-add if needed)

If both issues continue after all steps above, testing your account via Outlook Web App (browser version) can help determine whether the behavior is tied to Outlook desktop or the account itself.

Please let me know if these solutions help.

No, this did not fix my issues.

I have tried all options within the Reading Pane and it makes no difference.

All of my emails become "Read" without me reading them.

    I alos uddated my 365.

    Thank you,

For your first issue regarding emails being marked as read without your interaction, you may want to adjust the settings for when Outlook marks emails as read. You can do this by enabling the Reading Pane and selecting how you want emails to be marked as read. Here are the steps:

    1. Open Classic Outlook.
    2. Go to the View tab and select Reading Pane. Choose either Right or Bottom to display emails in the main window.
    3. Then, select File in the top left corner, choose Options, and go to Mail.
    4. Scroll down to the Outlook panes section and select Reading Pane. You can choose to mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane or when the selection changes.

For your second issue with spam filtering, it may be a known bug affecting POP email accounts, especially after updates. If your spam filter stops working, consider checking for any updates or patches that may address this issue. You might also want to review your spam settings and ensure that the problematic senders are not being inadvertently allowed through your filters.

If these issues persist, you may want to look into creating a new Outlook profile or reinstalling Outlook to resolve any underlying problems.
