Hi. I have a Surface Pro 5. Just this morning I checked my laptop's battery level and it was around 80%. But a few minutes ago, even though I had 50% charge, after opening a fairly heavy program, the laptop shut down after two or three minutes and when I plugged it in and turned it on, I had 3% charge and my battery level suddenly dropped to 30%. Why did this happen? Will calibrating the battery make it OK again? I had worked with my laptop before and the battery worked up to 12-13% and this did not happen. This is the first time it suddenly went from 50% to 0%.

This is battery wear, not a software issue.

Calibration might slightly improve the percentage reading, but it will not fix sudden shutdowns if the battery cells are degraded.

Open Command Prompt as Admin and copy-paste the following:

powercfg /batteryreport and hit the Enter key.

    Open the generated report file.

Look at: Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity

If Full Charge Capacity is below 50–60% of Design Capacity → battery is near end of life.
