Need help getting licensing issue fixed

I am requesting assistance regarding a licensing issue involving Windows Server 2022.

Our organization operates a clustered virtualized environment consisting of two three-node clusters (six physical hosts total) with live migration and replication enabled. During the purchasing process, it was clearly communicated to the reseller that our environment requires Windows Server 2022 Datacenter due to virtualization density and failover configuration.

However, we were supplied with Windows Server 2022 Standard 16-core licenses instead.

Our servers are currently installed with Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (originally deployed using Datacenter Evaluation media), and given our clustered architecture, Standard edition does not meet Microsoft’s virtualization and failover licensing requirements without significant stacking.

We are seeking guidance on:

The proper corrective action when an incorrect edition was supplied.

The process for converting our licensing to Windows Server 2022 Datacenter.

Any documentation required to demonstrate that Datacenter was requested at the time of purchase.

Ensuring we remain fully compliant during this transition.

We want to resolve this matter promptly and ensure our licensing aligns with Microsoft’s requirements for clustered virtualization environments.

Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi Damon,

You will need to have your reseller replace the incorrect Standard licenses with Datacenter licenses, as Microsoft does not allow upgrading Standard to Datacenter through licensing alone. Once you obtain valid Datacenter keys, you can run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX to convert your current evaluation installations without reinstalling. Keep purchase orders or correspondence showing that Datacenter was requested, as this will support your case with the reseller or Microsoft. During the transition, you remain compliant if you are actively resolving the issue, but you should finalize the correction quickly to avoid audit risk. Only Datacenter licensing provides unlimited virtualization and full cluster rights, so Standard cannot meet your environment’s requirements.

    Harry.
