Hello! My laptop suddenly got locked by the BitLocker feature and I cannot seem to unlock it 🥲 I believe I have the right recovery key because my laptop is shown as connected on the Devices tab. Every time I enter the key, a message shows up as failed 😣 I don’t know what to do. I believe o have the right recovery key.

    Dear Angi

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I’m sorry to hear your laptop was suddenly prompted for BitLocker recovery and the key you found is being rejected. I understand how stressful this is, especially when you believe you have the correct key. At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the AI generated answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario. To help narrow this down, could you please share a few details below?

    • Is this laptop signed in with a personal Microsoft account, or a work/school account?
    • Where did you get the recovery key you tried (Devices page, the recovery keys page, a file/USB, or from your organization)?

In the meantime, here are a few basic steps you can try:

1.Note the Key ID on the BitLocker recovery screen

    • On the blue BitLocker recovery screen, look for “Recovery key ID” (or “Key ID”).

2.Retrieve the recovery key that matches that Key ID

If this is a personal device using a Microsoft account, on another device/phone:

    • Please open https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey
    • Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the locked laptop.
    • You may see multiple keys, find the one whose Key ID matches the Key ID on the recovery screen.
    • Enter that 48-digit key on the BitLocker screen.

    3.Eliminate common input/keyboard issues

Please also try these to rule out typing-related failures:

    • Make sure you are entering all 48 digits (numbers only) exactly as shown.
    • If available, try a USB external keyboard.
    • Ensure NumLock is enabled (if you’re using a number pad).
    • Type slowly in the same grouping you see in the key (often grouped in blocks).

4.Check for other places the recovery key might be saved

If you previously saved the key, it may be in one of these places:

    • A printed copy
    • A text file on a USB drive
    • A file saved on another PC/storage location

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying effective solutions. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope the steps above help you find the recovery key that matches the Key ID on the BitLocker prompt and regain access to Windows as soon as possible. Wishing you a smooth unlock process and minimal disruption while you get your device back up and running.

If your BitLocker recovery key is not working, here are some steps you can take:

    1. Double-check the Recovery Key: Ensure that you are entering the correct recovery key. The recovery key is a 48-digit number, and even a small mistake can cause it to fail.
    2. Check for Multiple Keys: If you have multiple devices or have saved the recovery key in different locations (like a USB drive or printed copy), verify that you are using the correct one associated with your laptop.
    3. Use Recovery Tools: If you continue to face issues, you may need to use recovery tools. If you have access to another computer, you can connect your drive as a secondary drive and attempt to unlock it using the recovery password there.
    4. Contact Support: If you are unable to unlock your device with the recovery key, you may need to contact Microsoft support or your device manufacturer for further assistance. They may have additional recovery options available.
    5. Data Recovery Options: If all else fails, you might need to consider data recovery options, which could involve using a recovery image or other methods that may result in data loss.

Remember, if you are using a device managed by an organization, reach out to your IT department for help.
