Cannot Add Guests to Teams Channel – Self-Employed Account, No IT Admin

Hello,

I am unable to add any guests to my Teams channel. Every time I try, I receive the following error message:

“Looks like there was an issue. Try adding this person. If it doesn’t ask your IT admin to add them.”

Since I am self-employed, I do not have an IT admin, because this is my own account. Additionally, I only have 7 other people in the channel, so it cannot be an issue with exceeding member limits.

It is also not a problem with the guest’s email address, because I am unable to add any email address at all in any channel, and I receive the same error message every time.

Could you please advise where the issue might be and how I can resolve it?

Thank you.

    Hello @MAGDALENA THALER,

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum!

I understand that you are self‑employed and mentioned that you do not have an IT admin. However, to help you accurately, I kindly need a bit more information from you:

1.Could you please provide your full email address (the one you use to sign in to Microsoft Teams)?

I've sent you a private message to help protect your personal information, so please check your private messages and send me your case number there. This will allow me to help you check the status.

Note: To access the private message platform, please reload this thread page and select “View messages” as shown in the screenshot below.

2.What Microsoft 365 subscription are you currently using?

3.Could you share a full screenshot of the exact error message you are seeing?

Besides that, you can note that even if you are self‑employed, if your account is a Microsoft 365 business account, there is still an “admin side” in the backend; because you are technically the owner of your tenant. This means certain settings that control Guest Access may still need to be checked or enabled.

Please understand that our initial response may not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to identify the root cause and find a solution.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The issue you are experiencing with adding guests to your Teams channel is likely related to the external collaboration settings in Microsoft Teams or Microsoft 365. Since you are self-employed and do not have an IT admin, you will need to check and adjust these settings yourself.

Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Check External Collaboration Settings: Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center and navigate to External identities > External collaboration settings. Ensure that the settings allow for guest users to be invited. You may need to enable options that allow members to invite guests.
    2. Guest Access Settings: Go to the Teams Admin Center and ensure that guest access is enabled for your organization. This setting needs to be configured to allow guests to be added to Teams and channels.
    3. User Permissions: Make sure that your account has the necessary permissions to invite guests. If your account is set up as a self-employed user, it should typically have these permissions, but it’s worth verifying.
    4. Try Adding Guests Again: After making any necessary changes, try to add the guests again to see if the issue persists.

If you continue to face difficulties, you may want to consult Microsoft support or the Microsoft Community for further assistance.
