Hello,

I am contacting you regarding an activation issue with a recently purchased Windows Server 2022 Standard license.

While scratching the product key's security code, two characters were unfortunately erased and are now unreadable.

The machine in question has never been activated, and the key has never been used.

Currently:

• Online activation fails due to the missing characters.

• The reseller is directing me to Microsoft for verification or recovery of the complete key.

I have, of course:

• Proof of purchase

• The original physical media

• The partially readable key

I would like to know if it is possible to:

  1. Verify the key's validity in your database
  2. Recover the two missing characters
  3. Or provide a replacement if necessary

Curent I'm unable to open support ticket without payment, or I don't know how to do

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Windows for business | Windows Server | Devices and deployment | Recovery key

    thanks for your response .

Unfortunatly each time I tried to open a ticket on microsoft support site, they're asking for contract or subscription . and I cannot access to step 2 (Probleme description) without adding contract or subscription. I have neither. just bought media and licence to a reseller for one of my customer.

I really don't have any clue yo how open support ticket without charges.

and also I'm unable to see how open a ticket under “Product Activation” for Windows Server.

no way to continue without adding support ticket

    Hello,

This issue is not related to Windows for Business or Windows 365 Enterprise. It is specifically a Windows Server 2022 activation problem tied to a damaged product key.

Unfortunately, once characters on a physical product key are destroyed, Microsoft does not provide a way to reconstruct or guess the missing characters. The activation system requires the full, intact 25‑character key. What you can do is open a support case with Microsoft Licensing and provide proof of purchase along with the partially unreadable key and the original media. Microsoft can then validate the license against their database and, if the key is confirmed genuine and unused, issue a replacement key. This process is handled through official support channels only; it cannot be done through automated activation or self‑service tools.

Since your reseller has redirected you to Microsoft, the correct path is to contact Microsoft Support directly. You do not need to pay for a support incident when the case concerns product activation and licensing; those are handled without charge. The best way is to go to https://support.microsoft.com/contactus and open a ticket under “Product Activation” for Windows Server. You will be asked to upload proof of purchase and details of the damaged key.

I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!

Unfortunately, I cannot assist with verifying the validity of your Windows Server 2022 product key or recovering the missing characters. Microsoft typically requires direct interaction for such issues, and I recommend reaching out to Microsoft Support directly for assistance with your activation problem. They will be able to guide you through the process of verifying your key and potentially providing a replacement if necessary.

You may also want to check if your reseller can provide any additional support or options for recovering the key.
