Hello Microsoft Support Community,

I need urgent help recovering access to my Microsoft 365 Developer Program account. I was the sole global administrator of my tenant. Unfortunately, I recently reset my phone and lost access to the Microsoft Authenticator app, which was the only two-factor authentication (2FA) method configured on my account.

I did not have cloud backup enabled for the Authenticator app, and I no longer see any accounts inside the app. I was able to reset the password via my recovery email and phone number, but every time I try to log in, it still asks for the Microsoft Authenticator verification — with no other option (like email, SMS, or backup codes) shown.

Since I am the only admin on the tenant and cannot approve the login via the Authenticator app, I am completely locked out of the account. This account is critical for my development work, and I would be grateful if someone from Microsoft could help me reset or disable the 2FA temporarily or provide an alternate method to regain access.

Please let me know the exact steps I need to take or if there is a support escalation route I should follow.

Thank you in advance,

    Hi Sanjay Timilsina

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Based on your description, I understand that you’re the only global admin on the tenant and are unable to sign in because the Microsoft Authenticator app was the only MFA method configured and is no longer accessible.

In this situation, there are two official paths you can take to regain access to the tenant:

1.Please visit the following page and contact Microsoft Support by phone: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

From what I know, you will need to get past the initial AI system to reach the live support team. You can refer to the guide below for tips on how to get through more easily:

2.If method 1 is not working, please follow this link to create a trial tenant: Microsoft 365 Business Basic | Microsoft 365 - after that you will be able to access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to raise a support ticket.

Assuming that you have already created an account after registering a free trial and you can go to Microsoft 365 admin center and click "Help & support" icon to raise your ticket.

Please mention that you are raising a ticket on behalf of the affected tenant that you do not have access to. The support team will help you create the ticket under the affected tenant, and the Microsoft Data Protection team will then assist you.

Note: This process will take more time than usual (7-14 working days) for your account to get access again as Data Protection is always overwhelmed with the number of tickets. As I am forum moderator, I do not have access to Microsoft internal system to assist or push this process to be quicker.

For further instructions, you can follow this guide: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

Please note that this trial is available in 30 days. Before the expiration date, please go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center and proceed to cancel the trial to prevent further charges as this trial tenant is used for ticket creation. Instruction: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

I hope my information is helpful. Please give me any updates once you get this resolved.

To regain access to your Microsoft 365 Developer Program account after losing access to the Microsoft Authenticator app, you can follow these steps:

    1. Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support: Since you are the sole global administrator, you will need to reach out to Microsoft Data Protection Support. You can do this by calling their customer service hotline. Make sure to explain that you are locked out due to issues with the Microsoft Authenticator app and that you are the only admin on the tenant.
    2. Provide Necessary Information: When you contact support, be prepared to provide details about your account, including your administrator email address and any error messages you are receiving. This will help them verify your identity and assist you more effectively.
    3. Alternative Method - Create a Temporary Account: If you are unable to reach support, consider creating a new trial tenant. This involves signing up for a new Microsoft 365 subscription temporarily, which will allow you to access the admin console and submit a support ticket requesting assistance for your locked account. Note that this new tenant will not give you access to your original data but will serve as a means to contact support.
    4. Follow Up: After submitting your request, keep track of any ticket numbers provided by support for follow-up.

These steps should help you regain access to your account. If you need further assistance, feel free to reach out again.
