Every time I go to use the external speakers on my Windows 11 desktop, I get no sound. So, I run the audio troubleshooter and get the sound back, and it says "Adjusted Absolute Volume again".

What is the "Absolute Volume" and where is the setting? I search Settings and it says it can not find a setting for "Absolute Sound"

The "Absolute Volume" setting in Windows refers to a feature that allows the system to control the volume of Bluetooth audio devices directly from the Windows volume controls. This means that when you adjust the volume on your device, it also adjusts the volume on the connected Bluetooth speaker or headphones, rather than having separate volume controls for each.

In Windows 11, there isn't a specific setting labeled "Absolute Volume" that you can find in the Settings app. Instead, it is managed automatically when you connect a Bluetooth audio device. If you are experiencing issues with sound, it might be related to the audio drivers or settings rather than the absence of an explicit "Absolute Volume" setting.

To troubleshoot sound issues, you can try running the audio troubleshooter, ensuring your audio drivers are up to date, or checking the volume settings for your specific audio devices in the Sound settings under System settings.

    Hi Wee Willie 949,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I know it’s frustrating when your speakers suddenly have no sound and the only way to get it back is running the troubleshooter each time.

As explained above, this setting isn’t available as a toggle in Windows 11 and is managed automatically by the system.

To help prevent this from happening again, please try the steps below in order.

Step 1: Remove and re‑pair the Bluetooth speaker

This clears out any stuck Bluetooth audio settings.

    1. Turn off the speaker.
    2. On your PC, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
    3. Click your speaker and choose Remove device.
    4. Restart your PC.
    5. Turn the speaker back on and pair it again from Bluetooth settings.

This refreshes the connection and usually stops the volume from dropping to zero.

Step 2: Make sure Windows is using the correct output device

Windows can quietly switch audio to another device.

    1. Click the speaker icon on the taskbar.
    2. Click the small arrow ( > ) next to the volume slider.
    3. Confirm your Bluetooth speaker is selected as the output device.
    4. Adjust the volume and test the sound.

Step 3: Restart the Windows audio services

This resets audio without changing any settings.

    1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    2. Find Windows Audio, right‑click it, and choose Restart.
    3. Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
    4. Close the window and test the audio again.

    Step 4: Check for updates

Driver updates often fix this exact behavior.

    1. Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any available updates.
    2. If the issue continues, check your PC manufacturer’s website for the latest Bluetooth and audio drivers for your model.

    I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m happy to help.
